The mandate of the Department is to undertake job of planning, designing and construction of works of sewerage and drainage in urban areas of the state.

J&K UEED is responsible for protection of human populations from the effects of adverse environmental factors, protection of environment from potentially deleterious effects of natural and human activities.

It also addresses the issues of energy preservation and control of waste from human and animal activities. It is concerned with finding plausible solutions in the field of public health such as water borne diseases, waste water management, waste disposal, industrial hygiene and environment sustainability. Presently UEED is constructing sewerage treatment plants and its network so that sewerage flowing directly into the rivers is treated at STPs before its final disposal.
